JD Solomon serves as a co-author with Dr. Diane Lauritsen for this paper at the 2022 Joint Aquatic Sciences Meeting (JASM) in Grand Rapids, Michigan from May 14 to 20.
The presentation discusses challenges to effective communication with stakeholders related to complex, large-scale changes (e.g., climate change, atmospheric deposition of nutrients, acid rain) that can contribute to lake ecosystem changes in hydrology, chemistry, and productivity. Overcoming multiple “sacred cows” (business as usual) provides the biggest challenge in helping communities avoid killing the “golden goose” (their lake). A multi-year journey of a shallow lake in eastern North Carolina is used as a case example.
The Joint Aquatic Sciences Meeting (JASM) will be the world's largest gathering of aquatic scientists, students, practitioners, resource agency staff, and industry representatives in history. The Consortium of Aquatic Science Societies (CASS), JASM's parent organization, comprises nine groups representing various interests within the aquatic science realm. The JASM 2022 meeting is designed to bring together deep, multidisciplinary subject-matter expertise to collaboratively educate one another and solve the complex environmental problems facing our society and our planet today.
Dr. Diane Lauritsen has 45 years of experience in aquatic ecology, including work on benthic macroinvertebrates, invasive species, algae blooms, and nutrient dynamics in shallow lakes. Her aquatic interest was sparked as an undergraduate by summers at the University of Michigan Biological Station at Douglas Lake. She received an M.S. degree in Water Resources from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. in aquatic ecology from North Carolina State University. Dr. Lauritsen is Principal Limnologist at LIMNOSCIENCES.

Mr. Solomon serves as a member and former chairman of the North Carolina Environmental Management Commission. He is the author of the book Communicating Reliability, Risk, and Resiliency to Decision Makers: How to Get Your Boss's Boss to Understand. Mr. Solomon's second book, Communicating with FINESSE, will be released later this year.
